The Community Housing Trust Guelph is an emerging, community-led effort to create more stable, affordable, and human-centred housing in Guelph.
We are exploring a model where land held in trust for the community, and housing on that land is governed in ways that give residents a real voice. The goal is not just affordability, but a different kind of relationship to housing that is rooted in care, participation, and long-term stewardship.
This work is in its early stages. We are taking the time to learn, build relationships, and develop something that reflects the needs and values of the community.
Why this matters
Housing in Guelph is increasingly difficult to access and maintain. Many people are priced out, while others are living in systems that feel impersonal and rigid.
Existing models, including social housing, play an important role—but they can sometimes lack flexibility and resident agency. A community housing trust offers another approach:
- Land is removed from the speculative market and held for long-term community benefit
- Housing remains more stable and accessible over time
- Residents have a meaningful role in governance and decision-making
- The focus shifts from housing as an asset to housing as a shared good
This isn’t a quick fix. It’s a long-term strategy for building resilience and community ownership.
What is a community housing trust?
A community housing trust is a non-profit model that separates ownership of land from ownership or use of housing.
The trust holds the land on behalf of the community. Homes on that land are leased or managed in ways that keep them accessible and grounded in community governance.
This model has been used in cities across North America and beyond, often starting small and growing over time through partnerships, donations, and public support.
Where we are now
We are currently in a listening and learning phase. This includes:
- Connecting with other land and housing trusts to understand how they got started
- Hosting public meetings to gather interest and perspectives
- Exploring governance models that centre participation and accountability
- Beginning to shape a shared vision for what this could look like in Guelph
We are intentionally moving slowly. Getting the foundations right matters.
Get involved
This work depends on people. We are looking to connect with:
- People interested in alternative housing models
- Renters, homeowners, and those currently without stable housing
- Organizers, practitioners, and community builders
- Anyone curious about how housing can be done differently
